I went to Notre Dame for my undergraduate degree. The campus is next to South Bend, Ind. I knew absolutely nothing about this place when I got there, but I quickly realized it was fascinating. South Bend was caught in the past. It had these big, hulking factories that were defunct, and the most noteworthy was what remained of the massive Studebaker factory. That is what initiated my interest in the Studebaker story.
The company started out making horse-drawn wagons in the 1850s. It was a massive industrial venture, and it had an outsized influence on South Bend. When it went out of business in the 1960s, it was as if the lights had just switched off.
